Despite all the weather forecasts and some overnight rain, Sunday dawned bright and sunny. With the topography of Brands shielding the paddock from the worst of the wind, competitors were treated to the novelty of a dry qualifying session. Tim Kary was quickest of the F3s in fourth place overall; Keith Messer and Leif Bosson had spent most of the session circulating in close company and ended up with identical times, just a couple of hundredths ahead of Jim Chapman in his familiar Lotus 59. Unusually Chris Holland was just a little of the pace in fifth ahead of Geoff O’nion and Nigel Miller.

As is traditional Ian Gray leapt off into an unassailable lead with Ian Jones and Martin Anslow in hot pursuit. Sean McClurg’s Brabham BT21A in fourth place was just ahead of the battling F3s which were being led by Kary, Messer and Holland. Unfortunately an oil leak from McClurg’s car became terminal and he pulled off at Paddock leaving a large oil slick at Clearways out. The lap before this Messer had survived an interesting moment at Paddock, when gear selection issues left him with a box full of neutrals resulting in a trip through the kitty litter; this excitement dropped the veteran to the back of the field but allowed Holland and Chapman to take over the pursuit of Kary. Leif Bosson couldn’t repeat his qualifying speed and was beaten to fourth F3 by the recovering Messer; Jim Chapman made fastest F3 lap at 54.117 ahead of Messer 54.321, Holland 54.333 and Kary 54.543, less than ½ a second covering all four.

Next outing for the F3s is at Dijon on October 1st and 2nd where there are twenty three one litre cars entered in the open wheel race.
